Shoney Renewables Consulting (SRC) have completed a bat impact assessment and international review of bat and wind turbine interactions for a medium size wind farm in the Western Cape. SRC are pleased to report that client feedback was very positive.
The review outlined the results of an extensive international literature search of ‘grey literature’, published academic literature, other Environmental Statements, post construction management plans, and statutory consultee guidance from several countries.
The report assessed the sensitivity of the proposed development site in terms of bat usage, and identified mitigation measures that could be considered appropriate. The results indicated that the site is of low risk based on a number of published sensitivity assessments, and below the level of risk which would necessitate curtailment at lower wind speeds as a default mitigation measure.
However, the report also advised that based on the survey studies undertaken, an agreed adaptive and evidence based monitoring programme should be drawn up in conjunction with statutory consultees as a precautionary measure.
